Chang Can Dunk

Bringing “Chang Can Dunk” to Life with Crafty Apes VFX

One of my most rewarding projects as a VFX Supervisor was the Disney+ feature “Chang Can Dunk.” This film is a heartwarming story about Chang, a 16-year-old Asian American high school student who dreams of dunking a basketball by homecoming. The journey to achieving this goal requires him to confront his self-perception, friendships, and family dynamics.

A Collaborative Effort Across Borders

Working closely with our talented colleagues at Crafty Apes’ Montreal office, we executed a variety of advanced visual effects to enhance the storytelling. Our efforts focused on crowd extensions, environment enhancements, and seamless composites to ensure the audience remained fully immersed in Chang’s journey.

Key Contributions to the Film

Our team at Crafty Apes, which included some of the industry’s best VFX artists, worked tirelessly to bring the film’s vision to life. Here are some of the key contributions we made:

  1. Crowd Extensions: Creating realistic crowd scenes is crucial in a sports-centric movie like “Chang Can Dunk.” Our team meticulously crafted crowd extensions to fill the stands and bring the high school basketball games to life.
  2. Environment Enhancements: To ensure that the settings felt authentic and vibrant, we enhanced various environments ranging from crew cleanup to snowy winder evenings. These enhancements helped create a visually appealing and immersive experience for the audience.
  3. Seamless Composites: One of the hallmarks of great VFX work is making sure the audience never notices the effects. Our composite work ensured that all visual elements, from score boards to seat warmers, blended seamlessly with the live-action footage.

A Team Effort

The success of our VFX work on “Chang Can Dunk” wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and expertise of the team at Crafty Apes. Here are some of the key team members who played a vital role in this project:

  • Isabelle Henault – VFX Producer
  • Oona Choiniere – VFX Coordinator
  • Kyoko Fukushima – Compositor
  • Christian Simon – Compositing Supervisor
  • Devin Uzan – Senior Compositor

Their collective efforts and attention to detail were instrumental in delivering the high-quality visual effects that contributed to the film’s success.
